Organs

Before this class, I had never heard of DJ Shadow before, so I did not know what to expect. When I first started listening to DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing, I thought the whole album had a very calm and relaxing mood. Although some of the songs did sound alike to me, my favorite song from the album is Organ Donor. It really stood out to me because of the organ used. I really like the sound of the organ mixed with the drums. When I think of organ music, I think of slow and solemn songs, but this song is upbeat. It is completely different from what I think is typical organ music. The organ parts are a bit slow, but with the drums mixed in, it sounds upbeat. It almost has a dance beat to it when the drums are mixed in. The sound of the last 30 seconds changes a bit and it almost sounds that something that would be background music for a video game.

Is the name of the song a play on the word ‘organ’? When I hear the song, I don’t think of an organ donor or anything related to it. The only relation I can find is the instrument of the organ and the title being a play on words.

The song starts off with a few seconds of something that sounds completely different from the rest of the song. I cannot understand what is said. It sounds as if the song will be a dance song, but it echoes off into the organ music.

  1. I did not know what to make of the assignment. The music is very different from what I typically listen to but I enjoyed it very much. The song Organ Donor was one of my favorite songs on the album. Even though the song is barely two minutes, it can stand on its own. It has a fun beat going from slow to fast which captures the attention and get a person out of their funk. I believe music can definitely change a person’s mood and was very surprised to find songs I would enjoy. DJ Shadow has a way of mixing the instruments to convey a definite message.
